RESET® and World Green Building Council Collaborate to Launch Plant-a-Sensor Campaign

July 8th, 2019 00:00

RESET® is proud to announce its latest collaboration with the World Green Building Council: a global Plant a Sensor campaign aimed at collecting and compiling air quality data worldwide.

Plant a Sensor is part of both the WorldGBC’s Air Quality in the Built Environment Campaign and the RESET Earth project, and represents both organizationscommitments to furthering global advocacy in issues of air quality by improving access to research and data. Further increasing its breadth of impact, the Plant a Sensor campaign is also designed to support Earth Challenge 2020, a global campaign and database empowering scientists and citizens with environmental data.

Currently, at least 7 million people around the world meet premature deaths annually due to exposure to air pollution, yet the global population at large remains unaware regarding the quality of air that we breathe. Plant a Sensor aims to combat this by increasing awareness on air quality levels, creating expansive data that can be used to further air quality research, and thus inspiring better policy change regarding air pollution and sustainable building.

“We’re delighted to be working with RESET to co-lead our Plant a Sensor initiative, as part of the WorldGBC Air Quality in the Built Environment campaign. We believe that heightened global coverage of air quality, both indoors and outdoors, is necessary to stimulate awareness of the air pollution crisis. We look forward to working with our global GBC community to mitigate the impact of the built environment sector on air pollution that is seriously damaging to human health as well as a potent forcer of climate change"

- Cristina Gamboa, CEO World Green Building Council

With over 91% of the worlds population living in areas that exceed safe levels of air pollution, it is crucial now more than ever to ensure that as a global community we are taking steps to monitor and consequently improve the quality of air that we breathe. We are extremely excited to partner with RESET to Plant a Sensor in over a thousand locations worldwide and pursue: increased global awareness on air quality, the empowerment of local GBCs, and more effective policy decisions in combating the threat of air pollution.

- Catriona Brady, Head of Better Places for People, World Green Building Council

Raefer Wallis, CEO and Founder of RESET, had this to add on the WorldGBC joining in to co-lead the Plant a Sensor campaign

Through our collaboration with WorldGBC we hope to catalyze a live and expansive data set for air quality research, continue to raise awareness and inspire greater environmental advocacy and action. The Plant a Sensor campaign leverages RESET’s global network of accredited monitors and professionals, existing air quality data and assessment software to contribute to positive global change.

Plant a Sensor was initially launched by RESET in support of Earth Challenge 2020, with the participation of diplomatic communities such as the American and Canadian embassies in several cities around the world. Outdoor monitors of Commercial Grade (B) quality being deployed in those locations are contributing to research on monitor performance and the nature of air pollutants in a given area, as well as contributing data towards the creation of an international baseline in the RESET Earth database.

Now, with the WorldGBC joining in to co-lead the campaign, Plant a Sensor is being scaled across WorldGBC’s global network of Green Building Councils and members.

Plant a Sensor also launches with the participation of leading property owners and operators, inclusive of Tishman Speyer, Kerry Properties, Hermes Investment Management, V-Capital (Vanke) and Hines. Via the WorldGBC and RESET networks, the community of engaged participants will continue to grow with the addition of more commercial real estate projects, diplomatic communities, and existing air monitoring projects worldwide.

For this growth to occur, we encourage all interested participants, whether interested in deploying additional air quality monitors, adding existing monitored data to the global RESET Earth database, contributing to the Better Places for People program or pursuing sponsorship opportunities with the WorldGBC, to contact us for further details.

About the World Green Building Council

The World Green Building Council is a network of local and regional Green Building Councils: organizations around the world that partner with, campaign for, and facilitate, the construction of sustainable buildings and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in the construction industry.

About Better Places for People

The Better Places for People project is a World Green Building Council program which unites GBCs in over 30 countries in an attempt to increase the supply and demand of green buildings worldwide through sponsoring local projects, providing technical resources, and sharing information via research reports.

About RESET® Air

RESET® Air is the worlds first sensor-based, performance-driven building certification program where indoor air quality is monitored and measured in real-time. Buildings and spaces are required to consistently maintain healthy indoor air quality at all times, as defined by RESET® Air’s comprehensive standards for air quality levels, hardware performance, installation, and maintenance, and data communication. RESET® is developed and managed by GIGA, an independent third-party organization that combines building standards development with cloud software to promote the affordability and scale of healthy buildings.
