RESET Factoid #1 - The Impact of Interior Embodied Carbon

RESET team has been gathering a lot of interesting knowledge, which will now be shared in a series of these factoid infographics.

Buildings account for 39% of global GHG emissions. 11% of global GHG emissions (or approximately 28% of global GHG emissions from buildings) come from embodied carbon. This figure only accounts for the building's structure and excludes the embodied carbon from interiors.

RESET’s research, along with data from the Carbon Leadership Forum, shows interior embodied carbon is nearly equal to that of the building structure, contributing up to 10% of global emissions. This means the total embodied carbon could nearly double previous estimates, increasing the percentage that buildings account for in global GHG emissions.

The oversight of interior embodied carbon is largely due to its complexity in data collection, a challenge the RESET Embodied Standard is designed to address with a data-driven approach that assesses emissions and enables industry benchmarking.
